How
rattling works – or doesn’t work
If you’re an experienced archer, you probably know about antler rattling.
Traditionally, a hunter simulates the sound of two bucks fighting by striking
antlers or using rattle bags. Rutting bucks are lured into range by the prospect
of sparring for dominance in a prime breeding area.
The
problem is, you’re up in a tree stand making noise, and
just when the buck comes within range, he realizes the sound isn’t
coming from the ground. Before you know it – he’s
gone.
The
Treestand Rattl’r Difference
The drop-down design of the Treestand Rattl’r positions your rattler
on the ground while you maintain a hidden, prime position in your stand. Ordinary
rattlers might bring in bucks, only to be spooked by hunter movement or have
their elevation pinpointed. With the Rattl’r, you’ll draw bucks
in closer and, with hands-free operation, have a perfect shot at that big buck.
Rattl'r
Features:
• Durable weather-resistant bag
• Mesh bag allows for maximum sound
• Engineered to most closely resemble antlers clashing
• 30 ft. string allows for use in the highest tree stands
Using
the Rattl’r
The best time to utilize antler rattling is in the pre-rut, early rut or “chase
phase” when bucks clash to establish dominance in anticipation of breeding.
Tie the treestand rattler to the seat of your stand. Leaving some slack in
the rope, drop the bag between two and three feet to imitate the sound of antlers
clashing, signifying the start of a sparring match. From there lightly lift
the string up and down just a few inches to simulate the noise that drives
bucks wild. Repeat every fifteen minutes or so, or any time you spot a buck.
Tips:
• A treestand in a bushy under-story with poor visibility, but clear shooting
lanes, is an ideal set-up.
• Spend
time in the woods scouting for deer and deer sign prior to the
rut, locating high traffic areas, like trails leading to and from
feeding and bedding areas.
• Scent
control is critical, since interested bucks will circle downwind
before approaching.
• Use
with a decoy to bring bucks in even closer.
• Avoid
calling, as it will hurt the realism of your set-up, drawing the
deer’s attention to your tree. |
